MIKE Cain & Dave Harper
We share the same ethos, creative direction and a studio, which is based in Stoke-on-Trent, UK.
We are essentially abstract artists who work within the Modernist tradition. Others have described our work as expressionist with a bold, raw or gritty look.
Our ceramic art is based around slab and coil built slipware. We use traditional techniques but these are combined with a willingness to experiment and incorporate other materials in our work such as wood and metal. We often use found objects either to inform our practice or directly within our pieces.
We each have our own themes, motifs and starting points but share influences such as the industrial revolution and its impact on landscape of Stoke-on-Trent and the North Midlands.
Besides ceramic art we we also paint, and make sculpture.
Mike and Dave share the same creative direction, which is based around experimentation & abstraction. Their studio is in Penkhull, Stoke-on-Trent. The city is still often called ‘The Potteries’ because it was once dominated by the ceramics industry.
Mike was born in Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire in 1941. He studied at the Burslem school of Art under Arthur Berry and completed a degree in Fine Art at Coventry Polytechnic. His work over the last fifty years has included painting, print making, sculpture and ceramic art.
Dave grew up in a small village on the Derbyshire - Staffordshire border. He went to art school in Derby and completed his degree at North Staffordshire Polytechnic in Stoke on Trent. The changing industrial scene and the landscape of the Peak District and Staffordshire Moorlands are long term creative influences.
